Review: DuckTales Remastered (Wii U)

Scrooge McDuck is back and on the hunt for TREASURE! Is this remake worth the $14.99 (eShop) or $19.99 (physical)? Well only one way to find out, grab your cane and get ready to pogo.

DuckTales Remastered is a HD remake of the original DuckTales game released in 1989 on the Nintendo Entertainment System. Straight from the start you can tell Capcom was excited to go back to their hay day, the Capcom logo screen has the classic sounds.
After The Beagle Boys raid Scrooges money bin, they capture Huey, Dewey, and Louie. Like any good uncle Scrooge must resucue them, with the help of Duckworth, Scrooge defeats Big Time Beagle and he drops a painting. The painting turns out to be a map which will lead Scrooge to five different treasures.

DuckTales looks just like the TV show, sadly there aren’t any full motion cutsecnes, the animations that you do see, however are great. The game is colorful and each character looks wonderful, you can tell a lot of care and love went into DuckTales. All the art from the characters to the backgrounds were done created by two Disney Television artists, Mike Peraza and Rick Evans. Scrooge will find himself seeing some beautiful worlds, like The Amazon, The Moon, Transylvanian, and others. Along side the beautiful artwork there’s a ground soundtrack and very, very amazing voice acting.

The Soundtrack, composed by Jake Kaufman is his take on the classic soundtrack. Kaufman, while staying true to the original soundtrack made it feel new and crisp. The best part of DuckTales Remastered (aside from the classic platforming) is the voice acting. Capcom has all of the surviving cast members of the original series to voice their character, so that means Alan Young being Scrooge McDuck.
DuckTales Remastered brings back the challenge in classic gaming, hard jumps and boss memorization. A few things were fixed to make the game slightly easier, the main thing being the pogo jump, however there is a way to go to “hard pogo”. DuckTales is a nice nod to classic gaming while still keeping it easy to pick up for new gamers to the classic platformer genre.
It’s great to see Capcom release something without DLC already being on the disc and going back to what made the company a great success in the 80s’ and 90s’. DuckTales Remastered has a great visuals and audio, and great voice acting. The game will challenge players but, it isn’t challenging enough to make the player rage quit. Sadly there isn’t many levels and once you get the boss patterns down there’s a huge drop of difficulty. That said I give DuckTales Remastered four out of five.
